FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- I come across records in the database that contain old information. Does that mean that entries are out of date?
With few exceptions, records with old dates imply that either development of the product in question has been discontinued/suspended by the developer, which should be indicated somewhere in the record, or that we have been unable to establish its status because there is no information about this product in any of the sources we use.
- How do I use the molecular marker database?
The molecular data module contains more detailed information about therapeutic targets of drugs included in the new and marketed drug modules. It can be searched by using the target identified in the new drug module. However, the molecular data module contains additional information regarding targets of value in diagnostic/prognostic or pharmacogenomic applications. In order to identify potential targets by indication, simply enter a cancer type (i.e., prostate, lung, bladder, etc.) in the Cancer Indications field.
- Why do I need to use the individual search fields rather than simply use the keyword function?
The keyword search is not sufficiently specific. Also, once you have obtained the results of your search you will not be able to further modify them to narrow your search. In order to specify your search (build a query) you would need to enter information in one or several search fields. Use the keyword function: - to peruse the database and see how much of something is in the database before performing a specific search; this approach helps in establishing the validity of more specialized searches
- when it is not obvious which search field to use to look for something
- How do I use the toxicity field?
In the New Drug Module, the toxicity field described toxicities encountered during clinical trials. Such toxicities may change as a drug advances through clinical testing or is used in different regimens. You may search this category to look for drugs with specific toxicities, such as alopecia, nausea, neutropenia, etc. When the drug is approved by the FDA, established toxicities are part of the label.
- If I am unable to locate a record, how do I make sure I am not doing something wrong?
Always search both the New and Marketed Modules for the item in question. Make sure your spelling is correct and that you have tried your search using various forms of the word in question (e.g. spaces/hyphens between letters and numbers). When looking for company pipelines, make sure you enter the company's name in both the Primary Developer and Affiliation fields. Make sure to reset the knowledgebase everytime you initiate a new search.
